Family counseling sessions are focused on helping family members improve communication, resolve family issues, and recognize and cope with special family circumstances.
Families rarely have one problem. They have a pattern, who gets talked over, who goes quiet, who ends up carrying everyone else. By the time people call, they usually can't see the pattern anymore because they're inside it.
Family sessions are for naming that out loud with everyone in the room, and then changing it. Teenagers who've stopped talking. A blended family where the rules were never agreed on. A parent's illness that reorganized everything. A loss the family never really discussed.
Whoever needs to be there. Sometimes that's parents and one child, sometimes it's the whole household, sometimes it starts with two people and grows. We'll decide that together on the phone before the first appointment so nobody is ambushed.
Children ages 9 and up and teenagers get the same respect as adults here. They're not brought in to be fixed or lectured.
If the core issue is the marriage rather than the household, start with marriage counseling. If a death is at the centre of it, see grief counseling. New to counseling? Read what to expect.
Call first so we can work out who should be in the room.
